    frequent questions

The following are the most commonly asked questions about our software and on line data service.

    ONLINE SERVICE
    Q.  Where does the flood information come from?
    A.  The information is created from from FEMA FIRM panels. The paper maps are vectorized which will create a digital image of each panel. FEMA's FMSIS data and Tiger maps streets data are also used in the creation of our digital data.
    Q.  How does the program work?
    A.  Just type in a street address along with the zip code and your property will be plotted on a map.  The flood information, Community Panel Number/Zone/Date, will appear on top of the map.
    Q.  How can the program help me with determination of new construction or vacant/unimproved land?
    A.  As with everything GIS is not perfect. For situations such as these we give you the ability to mark an area on the map. You have the local expertise and you can identify these new or unimproved areas better than anyone.
    Q.  Is this the same as a flood certification?
    A.  No.  A flood certification also includes the standard FEMA form. This is not meant to be used for certifications.
    FLOODMAPS ON CD
    Q.  What is the Floodmaps on CD program?
    A.  The Floodmaps on CD is a compilation of scanned FEMA FIRM panels. They are placed into directories separated by counties, then further separated by town/city/village.
    Q.  Can I search by address using the Floodmaps on CD?
    A.  No.  The images on the CD are not geocoded, therefore a search by address is not possible.
    Q.  Well then, how do I find my area?
    A.  Searches using the Floodmaps on CD is similar to using the FIRM paper maps. You must go to desired county, then desired town and first look at Index panel. After finding your area on the Index you then open the corresponding panel and do a visual search for the subject property and flood determinations.
    Q.  Can I print the maps?
    A.  Yes.
    Q.  Can I import these images into other reports?
    A.  Yes. All the images are in JPEG format (similar to what a digital camera produces) and are very easy to manipulate.
    Q.  Can I annotate the maps?
    A.  Yes.
    Q.  Can I place an arrow to mark my subject?
    A.  Yes. DMS has a help folder which contains various subject and comp arrows which can be pasted directly onto a map.
    Q.  Is there technical support if I need it?
    A.  Yes. Tech support is available by calling 732-786-6100
